Using A Stationery Bike

By Adam Roell

The stationery bike is one of the earliest pieces of equipment designed for indoor fitness routines. The fact that it is still in general use nowadays is testament to how popular and useful this particular piece of equipment is. It provides a means to get a strenuous workout in warm and pleasant conditions. Being stationery, you could design exercise routines at certain settings realizing that the next time you utilize those settings, you will get specifically the same workout.

From a health and safety point of view, no other piece of equipment can beat the stationery bike. All moving parts, except the pedals, are under cover, so there is no chance of injury from unintentional contact. As you are seated and holding on to a support, namely the handlebars, it is nearly impossible to fall off. Lastly, you impose low stress on your joints while utilizing a stationery bike.

That is why apparatus manufacturers have tried to develop apparatus that minimize the effect of training routines on our joints. One such piece of apparatus is the Arc Trainer. At first sight, this is a peculiar looking piece of apparatus. Its odd design is key to what it does. It is intended to cut down strain on the joints, by offering a non-impact sort of exercise. It is effectively a strider, but it significantly restricts stress on the knee joint by forcing your legs to move in a way that ensures your toe always remains in front of your knee. Should your toes go behind your knee, the force on the knee joint goes way up.

Be wary of using routines that you see in books or on the internet. The ideal target heart rate for one individual may be completely unsuitable for another. There are a lot of factors that have to be taken into account. Your existing level of fitness, your at rest heart rate, your BMI, your weight and your age are all important factors.

Each course will aim to bring your heart rate up to the target in incremental stages. You need to begin with a warming up period before moving to a higher intensity. When your heart rate actually reaches target, maintain it at that level for the designated period. Finally, allow a cooling down period by not simply stopping at the maximum rate.

Even though stationery bikes are one of the safest of all kinds of exercise machine, you may still do yourself some harm if you do not set your bike up the right way. 0These bikes are developed to offer a method of exercising with very little force being placed on the joints.
